The Promise of Robotic Process Automation for the Public Sector

The purpose of this paper is to explain to non-IT readers the promise of Robotic Process Automation (RPA), a relatively new software technology used for automating high volume and mundane business processes and the practical impact of its implementation throughout public sector organizations. Examples abound of the technology being used at the global, federal, state and local levels. This research was done to give readers ideas for RPA implementation and to demonstrate practical benefits. It is by no means a comprehensive list. Rather, it is meant to spark the idea of “what is possible” for the public sector to be more effective and efficient, to be good stewards of citizen resources and to meet their growing expectations of public sector services, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
